It’s a fun and whimsical tale about two brothers who open a portal to a magical world — only to accidentally unleash quirky creatures that now threaten to ruin all the adults’ good moods. And when adults are grumpy and frustrated, there’s little room left for imagination and play.

The book is designed to be read aloud, with great attention given to the illustrations and layout — so that every page spread offers something new and colourful for children to look at.

Jóhannes Kristjánsson is a Danish author and illustrator who has always lived in two worlds — his own world of dreams and imagination often taking up most of his waking hours.

As a child, he found an outlet for this by staring out the window during class and drawing — constantly. Later on, music and theatre also became creative outlets for his imaginative mind. Luckily, all of these elements have come together in the creation of his first self-published book: The Portal Guardians – The quest for High Spirits.

Jóhannes has written and illustrated the book himself, and has also taken care of the layout and publication on his own.

While working on the book’s layout and making each page visually playful, the author created a custom typeface with a variety of styles.
